Teaching Kids about Healthful Eating at the Grocery Store
Trips to the grocery store are an excellent time to teach kids about nutrition and involve them in meal planning to give them some control over the foods they eat. Nutrition experts suggest that parents recruit their children for making a grocery list and show them how to focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as on whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products while limiting sugary drinks and salty foods.
At the grocery store, parents can explain how the layout is generally designed so that the outer aisles contain the healthiest foods (produce, meats, dairy, etc.) while the less healthful foods (snacks and processed foods) are generally concentrated in the inner aisles. To keep kids engaged during the trip, explain the information listed on nutrition labels and let kids pick out one or two new healthful foods that they’d like to try.
Trips to farmer’s markets and produce stands are another great way to teach kids about healthful eating. These venues offer fresh fruits and vegetables as well as organic options, all for often much less than you would pay at the grocery store. In some places, farmer’s markets are a real social event, involving healthful food samples, performers, and friends, making a jaunt to the weekly farmer’s market fun for the whole family.
At the Live-in Fitness Enterprise (LIFE) weight loss boot camp, you’ll learn nutrition information and tips such as this one that you can apply to the whole family. LIFE camps are not just “fat
farms;” they’re complete lifestyle change programs. As such, they focus on teaching participants how to instill healthful habits that will serve them well beyond their weight loss summer camps. When it comes to nutrition and fitness in Los Angeles, no one helps you make permanent health changes better than LIFE.
