Instilling Healthful Eating Habits from an Early Age

Recent research has shown that rather than reaching for sugary foods on default, kids actually mimic their parents’ eating habits from an early age. Thus, a kid who favors an unhealthful diet is often one whose palate has been trained to prefer certain foods by his or her parents. Of course, this isn’t always the case, but parents should be aware of the eating habits they teach their children. Here are few tips for focusing on health.

  • Eat meals as a family. With conflicting schedules and working parents, this can be hard to pull off, but the more often you eat together, the better. Kids who participate in regular family meals are more likely to make smart food choices and less likely to smoke or drink alcohol. Eating meals together also helps everyone reconnect. To keep older kids engaged, allow them to periodically invite friends to dinner, too.
  • Model healthful eating habits. Your children will follow the example you set, so set a good example by eating healthful foods, maintaining a positive attitude towards food, and showing kids how to practice portion control.
  • Avoid making food a source of conflict. It’s easy for kids to develop negative feelings toward food if parents dominate the subject. To avoid this, give your kids some control over whether they want to eat and which foods they can eat from the healthful options you’ve supplied. Don’t reward kids with dessert for finishing their meals, and don’t force kids to clean their plates—this teaches them to ignore feelings of fullness. Food shouldn’t be a display of parental love, either. Instead, show love by giving kids time, attention, and praise.
  • Offer kids a variety of healthful foods during meals and snacks. Kids’ food options are generally limited to what’s available at home. Since you control the foods and beverages you have in your house, make sure they’re good ones, including fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grain breads, yogurt, water, and milk. Limit kids’ fast food and soda intake, but don’t ban these items completely. Instead, let kids indulge every once and awhile.
  • Let kids help plan meals. Involve kids in creating a grocery store list, and use a trip to the store as an opportunity to explain nutrition, focusing on what information they should look for on labels and which foods to purchase. Kids can also help with preparation and learn how to prepare healthful meals for themselves.

Learning how to focus on nutrition and healthful lifestyles for the entire family is one of the core components of the Live-in Fitness Enterprise (LIFE) adult weight loss camp. Throughout the course of your weight loss vacation, you’ll meet with our staff nutritionist to learn about your individual dietary needs, ask questions, and receive instruction on how to implement lifelong habits that promote health. When you’re ready to leave the weight loss camp, California, and LIFE behind, you’ll receive a maintenance packet. This will help you keep up with the workout routines learned at our boot camp programs, cook nutritious food, and continue to meet your health goals. Interested? Sign up for LIFE now.
