How to Avoid Overeating at Parties
We all know how easy it is to overdo it at parties. One cookie turns into a handful, a beer into a six-pack, and a cracker with cheese into the whole box. But there are ways that you can outsmart your tendency to graze at parties and resist the call of the buffet. Here are a few tips to follow:
- Eat before you go. Many people skip meals in advance of the calorie loading that they anticipate taking place at the party. This is a mistake because denying your body the calories it needs to function will make you more likely to binge on comfort foods later on. Instead, focus on eating healthily throughout the day and snack on high-fiber foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, salad, or a small bowl of oatmeal just before you leave. By the time you arrive at the party, you’ll be less hungry and less likely to make a beeline for the food.
- Avoid the spread. If you hang around a table full of your favorite foods, you’re much more likely to nibble. Rather than wage an internal battle with yourself all night, remove yourself from the temptation by seeking out a different part of the room or another room altogether. You don’t have to isolate yourself from the party, however; just relocate yourself so that you’re not in close proximity to enticing smells and tastes.
- Stay hydrated. People often confuse hunger with thirst. By drinking water between bites, you’ll slow down the pace at which you’re eating, giving your body time to recognize when it’s full. Alternating alcoholic drinks with water is also a good idea to avoid consuming excess calories in liquid form and make smarter eating decisions.
- Give yourself a break. You can enjoy your favorite foods—in moderation. When you fill up your plate, allocate a small space for the sweet potatoes or the bruschetta you’ve been craving.
