Four Unhealthy “Healthy” Foods to Avoid

Today’s creative marketing and packaging makes it harder than ever to determine the real story behind many of the foods we most commonly eat. What seems like a healthy alternative may, in fact, be laden with calories and trans fats that will wreck a diet faster than you can say, “French fry.” Here are just a few of the worst offenders—four unhealthy “healthy” foods you should avoid.

  • Granola. Long a favorite of the outdoorsy set, granola is actually high in fat, sugar, and calories. And while the nutrition information may not say that outright, check the serving sizes. Most are only one-fourth to one-half of a cup. If you’ve got a hankering for granola in the morning, try pairing it with low-fat yogurt and sprinkling a little bit on top.
  • Salads. No way are salads unhealthy, you’re thinking. The problem with salads is not the salad itself, per se. It’s the toppings, such as cheese, and the dressing. Before you order a salad, be sure to check the nutrition information on the add-ons, as many restaurants (fast food ones, especially) do not include those calories in the overall calorie count for the salad.
  • Smoothies. While a smoothie seems like a surefire way to get your recommended daily serving of fruit, many smoothies mix in enough sugar and calories to equal a milkshake. If you prefer your fruit in liquid form, opt for fresh-squeezed juice or no-sugar-added smoothies made with whole fruits and low-fat yogurt instead.
  • High-fat yogurt. Yogurt is a good source of calcium, but many brands contain high amounts of saturated fat. With so many options available, choose low-fat and/or plain versions that can be flavored with sweetener later.
