Four Diet Don’ts

1. Don’t pay attention to fad diets. There’s a reason they’re called “fad” diets—they aren’t meant to last. Sure, you may lose weight quickly at first by cutting out all carbs or drinking only liquids, but in the end, you’re likely to end up stalling or even relapsing because chances are you’re not consuming enough calories to fuel your body, so your body will retain its fat for a source of energy.

2. Don’t use diet pills. If there really were a magic diet pill that could make you lose weight, our obesity epidemic would be a thing of the past. Most diet pills are not regulated by the FDA and have dangerous side effects ranging from mild (cramping) to serious (increased risk of cardiac arrest). Others are simply ineffective and a waste of money.

3. Don’t skip breakfast. In theory, skipping breakfast seems like a great way to cut out a lot of calories, but in truth, missing the most important meal of the day sets you up for binging later on and preventing your body from burning as many calories as possible. Focus on fruits and whole grains, and you’ll set yourself up for a productive day ahead.

4. Don’t deny yourself an occasional treat. Dieting is hard work, so if you find yourself unable to resist a brownie now and then, don’t beat yourself up for it. Realizing that dieting, like so many things, is subject to both successes and failures. Enjoy the treat, then refocus.
