Finding the Right Exercise Shoes for You

Having the right equipment can make the difference between a pleasurable workout experience and a nightmare. Nothing is more discouraging for someone starting an exercise routine at a summer boot camp than blisters, shin splints and sore muscles. Many times these are the result of ill-fitting or poorly designed shoes. In fact, this is one of the main reasons that people quit their exercise program.

But as anyone who has been shoe shopping knows, quality exercise shoes can be quite expensive, and all of the different models have different benefits that can confuse you. When you are spending $100 or more on exercise shoes, it’s important to know some basics to understand how to evaluate what is the right choice for you - especially when you consider the money you might spend on a weight loss vacation.

First, it’s a good idea to go to the store late in the day, when your feet are already swollen from walking around. You want to buy for maximum foot size, so make sure you also wear your exercise socks and any inserts or orthotics you normally use when working out.

When you try on your shoes, make sure that they fit well. This should mean that they don’t slip at all in the heel, and have a thumb’s width of room between the big toe and the front of the shoe. Exercise shoes should always fit well from the beginning – be wary if a salesperson says that they “need time to break in” – chances are they are just trying to make a quick sale.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask to take them out for a test run. Even if it’s just around the store, you’ll get an idea about how they will feel in real-world conditions that you otherwise would never get just walking back and  forth in front of a mirror.
